In fact, there are no strict provisions in textbooks on how to define Apache way. Everyone who participates in the contribution of the Apache community has their own understanding and interpretation, and 1000 people have 1000 hamlets.

Apachecon is the official global conference series of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). As a prestigious open source feast, apachecon has attracted much attention in the open source community and is also one of the well-known activities in the early stage of the open source movement.
As early as 1998, before the establishment of ASF, apachecon has attracted participants at all levels to explore “tomorrow’s technology” in more than 300 Apache projects and their different communities. Also at this session, developers who developed httpd services gathered together and decided to establish the Apache Software Foundation.
Apachecon is held once a year, usually in Europe or North America. It is a great opportunity for Apache developers to communicate, discuss and meet offline. It is also a rare occasion to share ideas and stir up ideas. Show the latest development and emerging innovation of Apache project through hands-on implementation, keynote speech, practical case study, training, hacking activities, etc.
This year, in order to better serve the rapidly growing Apache users and contributors in the Asia Pacific region, the apachecon organizing committee and the apachecon software foundation are pleased to announce that the first apachecon online conference for the Asia Pacific time zone apachecon Asia Conference will be held online from August 6 to 8, 2021.
In order to let everyone know more about open source and apachecon Asia, segmentfault will interview some track chair or conference lecturers to let you know the background of the conference preparation and the stories of these experts.
Today, we bring you an interview with Zhai Jia, co-founder of streamnational.
The following is the interview with Zhai Jia by segmentfault:
About Zhai Jia
Hello, I’m Zhai Jia. Thank segment fault for arranging this interview. At present, I am a PMC member and committer of Apache pulsar and bookkeeper, the top projects of Apache Software Foundation. I have been active in the open source community for a long time. At present, I focus on preaching Apache pulsar in China to better understand the advantages and characteristics of pulsar, a message flow system in the cloud native era.
At the same time, I am also the co-founder of streamnational, an open source basic software company founded in early 2019. The company is composed of members of the founding team of Apache pulsar, supports the construction and development of Apache pulsar community, and provides commercial services of Apache pulsar to help customers better use Apache pulsar, Provide the most professional solutions in scenarios such as message queue and streaming.
In apachecon Asia 2021, I am responsible for the promotion of messaging track. I also thank all lecturers from North America, India and China for their support and cooperation on messaging track.
Zhai Jia’s first contact with open source
I knew about open source in college, but I haven’t been particularly involved in an open source project. When I graduated from the Institute of computing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and joined EMC to engage in file system and distributed design and development, I was lucky to contact and use Apache bookkeeper – a low latency, high-performance and highly consistent distributed storage engine based on writeaheadlog in my company’s projects, and began to continuously participate in and contribute to Apache open source projects. Later, he gradually became a member of the project management committee (PMC) of Apache pulsar and bookkeeper.
What did individuals and companies gain from participating in open source and contributing to the Apache community?
Open source and Apache community are a treasure house with magic, which makes me get to know more small partners who agree with open source and technology. Everyone’s daily communication can bring great inspiration. Many people have changed from netizen ID to colleagues and partners. Since the establishment of streamnative, we have chosen the road of open source commercialization, that is, we firmly believe that open source can also bring commercial success. At present, streamnative’s team management also draws lessons from the open source community and adheres to a very flat engineer culture of self driving, asynchronous communication, remote office and no office.
Zhai Jia understands “the Apache way”?
Apache way is what we often call “the way of Apache”. In fact, there are no strict provisions in textbooks on how to define Apache way. Everyone who participates in the contribution of Apache community has their own understanding and interpretation, and 1000 people have 1000 hamlets.
However, in the long-term cooperation and governance process of Apache community, we have abstracted several major principles, which are generally accepted and reached consensus, such as winning authority, peer community, open communication, consensus decision-making, project autonomy, independence, and community is better than code.
Among them, “community is better than code” should be the most widely cited and deeply remembered one, that is, a healthy community has higher priority than high-quality code, and a strong community can repair and correct problems at the code level, which is the reason for building a continuously active community. We should really believe in the energy of the community, believe in it and stay with it all the time.
Apache way is not only suitable for open source projects under the Apache Software Foundation, but also can be used as a reference for independent open source projects of other manufacturers and other open source software foundation projects. Communication in the open source community can be referred to each other.
