The self-developed products of Aliyun database appeared at the top international conference ICDE to promote cloud native database to become an industry standard

On April 9, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time in Macau, Ali Yun held a conference on the theme of ICDE 2019.“Databases in the Cloud Age” Specialty Sharing Seminar.

This special seminar is organized byLi Feifei, Vice President and Senior Researcher of Alibaba Group and Head of Aliyun Intelligent Database Products DivisionFive well-known scholars and professors from academia were invited to participate as guests of Panel Discussion and held in-depth exchanges and discussions with nearly 100 participants. The five professors are:
Anastasia Aliamaki,Professor and ACM Fellow, EPFL;
Ihab Ilyas, Professor and ACM Distinguished Scientist, Vice Chair of ACM SIGMOD, University of Waterloo;
Guoliang Li, Professor, Tsinghua University;
C Mohan,IBM Fellow,IEEE&ACM Fellow,IBM; 
Xiaofang Zhou, Professor & IEEE Fellow, University of Queensland;

The whole symposium was divided into two parts. In the first part, technical experts from Alibaba Group and Aliyun Intelligent Database Products Division, Lu Manyi, Lin Liang, Huang Gui and Qiao Honglin, respectively, introduced the progress of Alibaba’s products and technologies in POLARDB for MySQL, POLARDB X, Analytic DB, and SDDP (Self-Driving Database Platform), as well as how to rely on innovation to help. Enterprises are facing challenges in data processing in traditional database business scenarios, reflecting the technological leadership, brand and culture of Aliyun Intelligent Database. At present, Aliyun Database ranks among the top three in the global cloud data market.

In the second part, several experts expressed their opinions on the trends and challenges of databases in the cloud era, and then discussed in depth the issues of concern to the participants.

Among them,Dr. C. MohanIn the cloud era, Serverless allows users to implement applications without considering hardware and software configuration, and automatically expand through PaaS. For databases, its robustness is the basic requirement. In addition, it also needs to strengthen the processing capacity of distributed load. At present, there are some challenges. For example, public cloud users are a private environment, hybrid cloud needs excellent distributed OLTP DBMS, and there is still a lot of work to be done on memory/storage architecture. In addition, data security and data management are issues to be considered.

Data show that more than 84% of Chinese enterprises are willing to accept cloud technology. In response to the current challenges,Professor Anastasia AliamakiIt is pointed out that data diversity (relational data, non-relational data) is a huge challenge to data processing in databases. It is necessary to build an intelligent database to handle various loads, to expand the SQL interface, and code-generation provides access paths to build corresponding underlying data at runtime. Secondly, data cleaning is extremely resource-consuming, including number. According to the migration tool from traditional database to cloud database (users can not care about the details of how to migrate). For users, if users can achieve the above two points, this is undoubtedly the biggest highlight of cloud database.

Professor Zhou XiaofangIt is considered that migrating from traditional database to cloud database is a system engineering. In order to improve the satisfaction of user experience, cloud databases strive to solve the problems of high concurrency and expansion. The migration of users from traditional databases to cloud databases is not only a migration, but also a process of self-tuning. It can build an ecosystem and conduct in-depth research from different fields.

Professor Ihab IlyasShared insights and achievements in the field of Data Cleaning and Integration to cloud. In particular, he pointed out that migration to cloud databases was not a problem in the cloud itself, and users often chose products that they were familiar with. Cloud databases must understand customer needs and solve customer problems. “For big data engineers, the implementation of algorithms is not a nightmare for them, but the Hadoop version is a nightmare for them,” he said. We find that migration is already happening, but we need to pay more attention to the process itself, and be sensitive to the process, which can bring users a painless migration.

Professor Li GuoliangIt is believed that the biggest characteristic of cloud database is that it does not need to maintain the database, which can save DBA costs. However, the database is more complex than the operating system. It is necessary to migrate the ecosystem designed by the database and construct the corresponding APP. Small company business applications are simple and easy to go to the cloud. Large companies are too complex to go to the cloud. Cloud vendors need to solve the application migration problem of large companies.

Finally, experts and scholars in the field of database emphasize that we can learn from the evolution and development of cloud and big data ecology, and gradually bring database technology into machine learning instead of forcing to build an omnipotent database. The last few professors also look forward to Alibaba’s continued contribution in this field.
