Python Software Foundation recently announced that it received funding from Mozilla Corporation and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), totaling $407000. The money will be used to support the work of PIP (Python package installer) in 2020. “Almost the entire Python software project ecosystem relies on pip, which will help everyone install software, diagnose and fix problems, and maintain infrastructure more easily.”
The python Software Foundation has developed a detailed three-stage work plan for this:
- The first phase will be carried out in early 2020, including some basic work;
- The second stage is called resolver work, which is planned to be carried out from March to June 2020;
- The third phase, which will focus on maintenance and sustainability, is scheduled to take place from June to December 2020.
Specific to each payment, there has been a corresponding plan. The $207000 from the Mozilla open source support award is planned for Python development, as well as preliminary user experience research and design work, which will last for five months. Python development includes resolving outstanding issues and PR, refactoring logic, working with downstream projects and users, and so on. User experience work includes consulting error reports and posts, interviewing users, running user tests, etc.
The $200000 donated by Chen and Zuckerberg Foundation (CZI) will be used for 12 months of Python development, testing infrastructure and project maintenance, as well as 4 months of user experience research and design work, and also to support the travel expenses of some developers.
Both sources of funding will be used for project management, including planning, testing and communication with stakeholders, as well as the administration of the python software foundation.
The python Software Foundation says it is working on the next generation rewriting of the PIP dependent parser. The project is in huge technical debt, but the refactoring work is coming to an end, and the prototype function is now in use. In June this year, they submitted proposals to Mozilla and CZI, and eventually received both funds. Next, the working group will continue to seek financial support for PIP, manylinux, pypi, etc.
Finally, the two foundations that provide support are introduced:
The Mozilla open source support (MOSS) Award program, run by Mozilla Corporation, is dedicated to supporting open source projects, including software, hardware, and firmware. Bonuses usually range from $5000 to $150000.
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) was founded by the Zuckerberg couple. The name of the funding to Python software foundation is “essential open source software for science”.
