Microsoft releases pluton processor to provide new security function for Windows PC

Recently, Microsoft released pluton security processor, which aims to bring security progress to the future windows PC. It is reported that Microsoft has cooperated with AMD, Intel and Qualcomm to develop the new pluton security processor.

This new security processor will make it more difficult for attackers to access the system. It will also improve Microsoft’s ability to prevent physical attacks, prevent the theft of credentials and encryption keys, and provide the ability to recover from software vulnerabilities.

Pluton design eliminates the possibility of the communication channel being attacked by directly establishing a security mechanism in the CPU. Windows PC using pluton architecture will first simulate a TPM and work with existing TPM specifications and APIs, which will immediately benefit customers from TPM dependent windows security enhancements such as BitLocker and system guard.

Pluton based windows devices will use pluton security processors to protect credentials, user identities, encryption keys, and personal data. This information cannot be removed from pluton even if the attacker has installed malware or physically occupies the PC. This is achieved by storing sensitive data (such as encryption keys) securely in the pluton processor, which is isolated from other parts of the system, helping to ensure that emerging attack technologies (such as speculative execution) cannot access key data.

Pluton also provides a unique secure hardware encryption key (shack) technology to help ensure that the key will never be exposed to protected hardware, even pluton firmware itself, providing an unprecedented level of security for windows customers.

Pluton provides a flexible and updatable platform for running firmware and realizes end-to-end security functions, which are written, maintained and updated by Microsoft. Pulot for Windows PC will be integrated with windows update process in the same way that azure sphere security service connects to IOT devices.
