01 survey data and research methods
From February to March 2020, the cloud native technology practice Alliance (cnbpa), together with lingqueyun and cloud native technology community, officially launched the “2019-2020 (phase II) Enterprise Cloud native technology practice” survey. In the beginning of 2020, the global economy will be negatively affected by the epidemic situation. This research is carried out in such a special background period. This is the second annual cloud native survey launched by cnbpa in conjunction with lingque cloud and cloud native technology community, and is also the only cloud native research for traditional enterprise customers within the observable range.
During the survey period, a total of 613 valid questionnaires were received. The participants were from companies in different fields and sizes, such as finance, manufacturing, energy, medicine, telecommunications, government and enterprise, and most of them were managers or above in the IT / Information Department of enterprises. This survey and the first cloud native research in 2018-19 have maintained unity and continuity in multiple dimensions. We hope to have a more targeted understanding of domestic enterprises’ cloud native goals, challenges and strategies for cloud native transfer.
Among the enterprises participating in the survey this year, 26.5% have 100-500 servers, 21.1% have 500-1000 servers, and 24.5% have more than 1000 servers. What’s interesting here is that with the development of business, the server scale has been reduced to a certain extent compared with last year, which is the effect of containerization to a certain extent. K8s has high scalability, automation and scalability. Through containerization transformation, it can maximize the use of server resources, use on demand, and effectively save server costs. At the same time, this conclusion also shows that the containerization demand begins to sink from the leading enterprises to the small and medium-sized enterprises, and from the leading enterprises to the mainstream enterprises.
Among the respondents, 21.4% came from infrastructure department, 15.3% from operation and maintenance department, 32.7% from R & D department, and 10.2% were senior IT managers of CIO / CTO and other enterprises.
**02 2018 VS 2019:
It application update has been accelerated significantly, and support pressure has been increasing**
Under the goal of reducing cost and increasing efficiency, accelerating the development of digital business has become the inevitable choice of traditional enterprises. Due to the rapid change of business scenarios and user habits, the digital business in many industries is growing rapidly. Digital business means a bold enterprise agile culture. Only with the help of more rapid and flexible development and delivery mode, can we meet the rapid changing needs of the market.
Therefore, a large proportion of the enterprises participating in the survey have a considerable scale of R & D team, and the enterprises themselves lead the research and development of it software. The proportion of R & D team with more than 100 people accounted for 51%, and the proportion of less than 20 people (23.5%) and 20-100 people (25.5%) was almost equal.
In terms of IT system updates, 25.5% of them have to update and upgrade every month, 29.6% of them have to publish every week, and the proportion of updating every 3-6 months has dropped to 16.3%. These are challenges for the development of the system 24 hours a week.
In terms of IT system support, we have obtained high data for several options we have given: the system complexity is getting higher and higher, accounting for 67.3%; the application delivery pressure is high; the delivery speed cannot meet the business requirements of 62.2%; the IT R & D and operation and maintenance management is complex, accounting for 64.3%; the IT architecture is too old, and the need for re planning options accounts for 31.6%.
Compared with last year’s survey, this group of data has slightly improved, which also shows that the huge pressure from the business level requires it to make a difference in cost saving, business agility, customer experience, business innovation and other aspects, and make rapid changes in enterprise applications and it architecture. Only “it architecture is too old” has a more obvious decline, indicating that some enterprises have begun to take action to upgrade the cloud native architecture.
03 52.3% of enterprises use cloud native technology in production environment, and container landing proportion is large
21.7% of the respondents used cloud native technologies (including containers, Devops, and microservices) in core business production, 30.6% in marginal business, 20.1% in test phase, 16.3% in evaluation stage, and 11.3% have not adopted these cutting-edge technologies.
Through the use of container, kubernetes, Devops, microservices and other young and advanced technologies, we can greatly speed up the iterative speed of software development, improve the agility of application architecture, improve the flexibility and availability of IT resources, and help enterprise customers accelerate the realization of value.
This data is also very consistent with Gartner’s forecast in 2019. Gartner report once pointed out that by 2020, 50% of the traditional and old applications will be transformed in a cloud based way, and by 2022, 75% of global enterprises will use cloud native container applications in production.
Among the surveyed enterprises, 8.2% of the enterprises used more than 5000 containers. Most of the surveyed enterprises used less than 500 containers (61.2%). The proportion of 500-1000 containers was 21.4%, and that of 1000-5000 containers was 9.2%. More and more mainstream enterprises have implemented container technology to support the construction of cloud native applications with more and more richness and increasing complexity.
For the construction of cloud native PAAS platform, 26.5% of the surveyed enterprises hope to self-study. The R & D teams of some medium and large enterprises have strong technical strength, and some even technical experts in the industry hope to lead the IT R & D and technology platform construction of their own enterprises after they have a better understanding of the new technology, so they are actively trying to build the cloud native platform.
But not necessarily. A larger proportion of enterprises choose to cooperate with third-party technology manufacturers (35.7%) to jointly develop cloud native technologies, and 37.8% of enterprises have both self-research and third-party cooperation. For more large and medium-sized enterprises, after careful investigation, it will be found that cloud native technology is difficult and self-study cost is high. Most enterprises need to cooperate with professional technology manufacturers to jointly implement cloud native technology and create a technology platform. Professional technology manufacturers can provide perfect consulting services, solutions and methodology. At the same time, the deployment of cloud native technology is accompanied by the change of enterprise IT culture and process, and also needs the cooperation of technology manufacturers and enterprises.
For most traditional enterprises, the cloud native PAAS platform is the bottom support of the core competitiveness of the future enterprise business, rather than the core competitiveness itself. Enterprises should invest more personnel, energy and cost into business-related R & D, instead of building the wheels of the underlying infrastructure, resulting in repeated waste of investment. The same is true for software developers and industry solution providers.
04 complex environment promotes the adoption of microservices, and microservices belong to service mesh in the future
Among the surveyed enterprises, 23.5% of enterprises use microservice architecture to transform legacy applications. Microservices can divide large and medium-sized applications into parts and simplify complex applications. Most enterprises can not afford to rebuild the technical foundation in an all-round way, gradually improve the speed and agility of existing applications, and then affect the culture and process level, which is a sound way to implement micro service.
A large proportion (40.8%) is to use microservice architecture to develop new systems, especially digital services. The development of new systems has no historical burden, so it can be loaded lightly.
The proportion of those who are cautious and in the evaluation stage can not be underestimated, accounting for 31.6%. As we have emphasized many times before, the essence of microservice architecture is to exchange for agility at the cost of operation and maintenance complexity. Enterprises need to consider whether their own business really needs agility to manage the complexity of operation and maintenance. Microservice governance is not only spring cloud or service mesh, it needs a complete set of infrastructure to support.
The transformation of microservice architecture needs small trials and small steps, rather than breaking the technical foundation. This is due to a variety of factors: first, for the requirements of business stability; second, for the requirements of technology exploration and try to reduce project risk; third, to promote the process requirements of enterprise internal culture, technology, and even departmental architecture iteration; finally, out of the most Macro consideration of final total cost of ownership.
As for the choice of microservice framework, 58.2% of enterprises implementing microservices chose spring cloud, and 11.8% chose service mesh.
Service mesh is the most popular micro service trend in the technology community. Production level applications of enterprises will choose mature and stable technologies with large-scale landing cases. However, from the perspective of technology development trend, service mesh has irreplaceable advantages over spring cloud, which simplifies the complexity of service invocation in microservice architecture. Within the expected two years, service mesh will gradually be popularized in China and eventually occupy the mainstream position.
05 Devops is becoming mature, and nearly 85% of enterprises have invested or planned to invest in Devops
Devops is becoming more and more popular. Nearly 85% of enterprises have invested or plan to invest in Devops. Among them, 35.7% of enterprises have implemented the plan, nearly 20% plan to deploy within 6 months, 21.4% within 6-12 months and 8.2% within 12-24 months.
Devops includes several concepts: the transformation of organizational culture, best practices, and the implementation of best practices with tools. There are many kinds of tools involved in the whole process of Devops. For customers, there is no fixed and completely standard tool combination. It is a trend to build an open platform for integration and arrangement of Devops tool chain. By integrating Devops tools on the platform, repeated workload can be saved and operational efficiency can be improved.
In the selection of Devops tools, the enterprises surveyed considered the most important ones: GitHub / gitlab / (74.5%), Jenkins (52%), JIRA (39.8%), confluence (35.7%), sonarqube (29.6%), code cloud (28.6%), Nexus (28.6%). Among the other options, the scale of dimensioning is very high.
06 middleware, storage, network, database and security are aligned with cloud native
When implementing cloud native technology, mainstream enterprises pay more attention to complete and systematic cloud native solutions rather than some separate and scattered product services.
With the popularity of cloud native technology, more and more application loads are deployed on kubernetes. Kubernetes has become the cornerstone of cloud nativity and a new interface between users and cloud computing. Database, storage, network, middleware, security and other peripheral technologies and components have begun to align with cloud native technology. Among the surveyed enterprises, middleware (such as elastic, fluent) accounted for 69.4%, database (such as NoSQL) accounted for 65.3%, storage (such as CEPH) accounted for 50%, and security reached 33.7%.
Among them, enterprises tend to adopt open source version accounting for 41.9%, commercial version for 22.3%, both accounting for 35.8%. Chinese enterprises are embracing cloud native concept and open source technology at an amazing speed. However, enterprises with higher requirements for security, reliability and service quality tend to choose the commercial version.
07 different 2020, it budget is conservative with persistence
In terms of the focus of enterprise IT departments in 2020, the respondents got more than half of the votes in terms of business cloud (56.1%), optimization of existing it (54.1%), private cloud / hybrid cloud deployment (53.1%), big data / AI and other new technologies. In addition, the number of votes for application development reached 33.7%. The potential of cloud native, big data, AI and other new technologies, as well as the inevitable trend of enterprise it’s full access to the cloud in the future are clearly visible.
In addition to the investment in technology itself, the surveyed enterprises also fully realize the importance of personnel skills training. In addition to technology, the top priorities included: digital transformation accounted for 74.5%, personnel skills training accounted for 68.4%, and team building accounted for 56.1%.
In the special year of 2020 under the epidemic situation, people’s estimates of IT budget are relatively conservative. The proportion that the IT budget will decline (36.6%) and the proportion that the IT budget will maintain at 1% – 5% (33.7%) account for more than 1 / 3, and the proportion of growth of 5-10% is 19.5%. There are also 9.2% of the enterprise IT budget which is not impacted by the economic situation brought by the epidemic, with an increase of more than 10%.
Digital transformation is not only a fashionable term, but also a change to be taken seriously. This survey shows some of the reality faced by the current enterprises, as well as the action practice of mainstream enterprises. It should be noted that each enterprise has its own personalized differences and task complexity challenges in terms of infrastructure and application architecture. Some enterprises only focus on a certain technology in the cloud to solve a certain skin cutting pain point. Some enterprises want to consider a complete and systematic solution at the same time, and pursue the maximum productivity of cloud computing technology. Each enterprise’s cloud native road should be personalized, customized, and step-by-step.
In 2020, China has won a window period of one to three months for the world at great cost and sacrifice. At the same time, due to the correct and decisive treatment of the epidemic situation, China has an early recovery period of one to three months (possibly longer) compared with most countries in the world, and domestic enterprises have a double time advantage in digital transformation. Considering that the impact of the epidemic on the economy may last until 2021 or even longer, the competitive advantage that digital transformation can bring to enterprises is becoming more and more important in the epidemic and post epidemic period.
Different 2020 is both a challenge and an opportunity. In the overall situation of conservative IT budget, enterprise decision makers must pay attention to how to seize the leading position, accumulate thick and thin hair!
The maturity of cloud native technology is not only reflected in the rapid development of technology, but also the ecosystem around it has been gradually improved.
