The goal of “double carbon” is being promoted

When the global average temperature rises by 1 ℃, the sea level may rise by more than 2 meters; If the temperature rises by 2 ℃, 99% of the world’s coral reefs will be degraded; If the temperature rises by 5 ℃, the overall environment of the earth will be completely destroyed and may even lead to mass extinction.

Now, the threat of climate change is approaching. According to the World Meteorological Organization’s global climate situation in 2020, 2020 is one of the three warmest years on record. The global average temperature is about 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than the level before industrialization (1850-1900). 2011-2020 is the warmest decade on record.

The importance of “carbon peaking” and “carbon neutralization” has become a self-evident social consensus to alleviate the greenhouse effect and deal with climate warming. With China, the European Union, Japan and South Korea and other countries and regions successively announcing carbon neutralization goals, nearly 30 countries and regions around the world have announced to achieve zero emissions around the middle of this century.

Focusing on China, on September 22, 2020, China announced to the world the goal of “carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutralization by 2060” for the first time at the 75th United Nations General Assembly. As a developing country and the world’s second-largest economy, the double carbon indicators issued by China show China’s determination and goal of advocating a community of common destiny, and the designation of the goal also represents China’s strength and commitment.

Since this year, the policy level has also frequently mentioned carbon peak and carbon neutralization, and 2021 has also become the first year of China’s “carbon neutralization”: on March 5, Premier Li Keqiang pointed out in the government work report of the State Council in 2021 that we should do a solid job in carbon peak and carbon neutralization, and optimize the industrial structure and energy structure;

On March 15th, general secretary Xi Jinping chaired the ninth meeting of the central finance and Economic Committee, emphasizing: promoting the healthy and sustainable development of platform economy, and putting carbon peak carbon into the overall layout of ecological civilization construction. Achieve the goal of carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutralization by 2060 as scheduled;

In April 30th, general secretary Xi Jinping stressed the importance of maintaining the strategy of ecological civilization in the twenty-ninth collective learning of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. Achieving carbon peak and carbon neutralization is not only a solemn commitment made by China to the world, but also a broad and profound economic and social change, which can not be achieved easily. Party committees and governments at all levels should show the strength of grasping the iron mark and stepping on the stone, clarify the timetable, road map and construction drawings, and promote economic and social development on the basis of efficient utilization of resources and green and low-carbon development.

Blockchain helps control carbon emissions

The essence of the dual carbon goal is to control carbon emissions. Energy conservation and emission reduction should be carried out both at the national level and at the level of people’s personal life, and the blockchain can help directly or indirectly.

For example, the distributed intelligent digital city will integrate blockchain, privacy computing, Internet of things, knowledge map and other technologies to provide more comfortable urban experience for residents and more efficient and intelligent management mode for urban governance.

As the main actor of the double carbon goal is the enterprise. The key to the low-carbon transformation of enterprises is the effectiveness and disclosability of carbon information. Blockchain technology and third-party services are two complementary tools for enterprises to take the road of low-carbon transformation. The successful application of blockchain in anti-counterfeiting traceability and supply chain management has fully proved the strong ability of this technology to maintain information integrity at the communication point, line and plane, so as to achieve accurate carbon emission.

At the same time, the data growth brought by digitization makes enterprises face challenges in storage performance and green energy consumption when realizing low-carbon transformation. Blockchain technology is combined with distributed storage. Distributed storage can effectively make up for the lack of storage space of blockchain. Blockchain based distributed storage has advantages in reliability, availability, cost and data privacy. The combination of the two can better serve data storage and avoid energy consumption in traditional data storage methods.

Taking IPFs distributed storage as an example, as a file storage and content distribution network protocol, it can cut files into several 256Kb fragments and store them randomly on each node. The efficient distributed storage of IPFs can undertake the advantages of blockchain in data storage, and greatly make up for the problems of low storage efficiency, high storage cost and difficult capacity expansion of blockchain, so as to better support the application of blockchain technology and help control carbon emissions.

Protocol lab demonstrates decarbonization open source solutions

In addition to the application of the technology itself, recently, protocol labs, the IPFs distributed storage project party, and energy web demonstrated an open source solution for encryption asset computing providers to purchase decentralized renewable energy to support the crypto climate accord (CCA).

In this solution demonstration, six filecoin storage providers purchased proven renewable energy from 3degrees using energy web zero. Energy web zero is an open renewable energy search engine, and protocol labs and 3degrees are supporters of encrypted climate agreements. This solution will eventually be applied on different blockchains to make it easier for cryptographic asset computing providers to provide proof of using green computing power.

The crypto climate agreement is a private sector led initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions from the crypto asset industry using open source decentralized solutions and promoting best industry practices. Energy web is a member driven global non-profit project aimed at accelerating the transformation of low-carbon and customer-centered energy paradigm by unleashing the potential of open source and digital technology. It is the co convener of the encrypted climate agreement, and protocol labs and 3degrees are both supporters of the agreement.

The renewable energy purchased in the exhibition is recorded on filrep, a reputation system that provides services to users interested in storing data on the decentralized filecoin network. It integrates renewable energy data from energy web zero into the reputation system, which allows users to take renewable energy into account when selecting storage service providers. Each record on filrep points to a verification page of energy web zero, which will display the location of energy production, record the type of renewable energy, and provide a certificate to prove the ownership of the corresponding renewable energy points.

Next year, protocol labs and energy web will create a series of open source solution packages to enable all filecoin storage providers to search and purchase renewable energy on energy web zero. Filecoin storage service providers and customers can verify the procurement records of renewable energy to prove their commitment to environmental protection. After all, these transactions will be recorded on the public energy web chain blockchain, and then can be tracked to the existing renewable energy records and various solar, wind and hydropower projects.

“We are pleased to develop this open source decentralized technology to support renewable energy investment and track energy use throughout the supply chain,” said Alan ransil, technical director of filecoin green project of protocol labs. “As an early adopter of these technologies, the decentralized network composed of filecoin storage providers will set an example for encryption asset computing providers and other industries.”

Filecoin is an open-source cloud storage market, protocol and cryptocurrency. It aims to become a decentralized alternative to traditional cloud storage services. Traditional cloud storage service providers such as apple, Amazon and Google have been actively moving towards the use of renewable energy. Now, decentralized storage and blockchain are also developing in this direction.

Many members of the filecoin storage service provider community expressed their support for this new project:

“Since the birth of our first prototype, the dream of decentralized storage network driven by renewable energy has been the driving force behind the company,” said the CEO of piknik. This is a storage service provider based in San Diego, California. “We believe that this is very important for the future of Web3 – our industrial development should set a high standard of transparency for our environmental footprint and renewable energy sources while protecting nature.”

“I was impressed by the Paris climate agreement and the Tokyo protocol, which established the urgency of protecting the environment,” said Alex Ma, a filecoin storage provider in Asia. “In my opinion, connecting filecoin and energy web zero takes the community a step further towards sustainable data storage solutions.”

“I’m glad that my efforts can make filecoin cleaner and more sustainable in protecting the environment,” Nelson Chen said. “This way makes it easy for me to support renewable energy and prove my contribution without changing my power provider or installing new equipment.”

Stuart Berman, who operates filecoin and other encrypted asset nodes, said: “we participate in filecoin because we believe in its long-term vision. This proof of concept model connecting filecoin and the renewable energy market is an important first step to address the environmental sustainability challenges of filecoin and the broad encrypted asset industry.”

Alex Altman, chief operating officer of seal Storage Technology Inc., said: “As we enter a new era of corporate environmental responsibility, seal storage technology is realizing its ambition to be carbon neutral by 2022. Filecoin has provided seal with an energy-saving decentralized cloud storage solution by consuming less energy than other blockchains. The combination with energy web will make our renewable energy use traceable and verifiable.”

The complete cross chain solution to be deployed in mid-2022 will create a unique decentralized ID (did) for each filecoin storage service provider participating in the energy web chain blockchain. They can link their renewable energy purchase records to their decentralized ID.

The link between the did of the filecoin storage provider and the verifiable green filecoin computing power will reflect the zero carbon emission status of the storage provider to the filecoin reputation system, and enable its energy attributes to be tracked throughout the chain of users, storage providers and various renewable energy projects.

This cross chain solution under development can be extended to computing providers in other ecosystems, because the underlying technical architecture will use verifiable and interoperable hash links, which is the basis of Web3 Technology (such as IPFs) and all blockchains. Therefore, this project will support the development of verifiable renewable energy encryption computing projects such as green hashrate.

Before releasing open source solutions available in the commercial field, protocol labs and energy web will share some of the latest developments in advance in the next few months.

Conclusion: since the industrial revolution, development has made human life more and more beautiful, but it has also had a negative impact on the earth’s ecosystem and social economy. Fortunately, the world has noticed the Red Alert of climate change and started to work hard to solve the problem – while promoting the construction of low-carbon awareness, actively promote the application of blockchain, IPFs distributed storage and other technologies, bring new opportunities for economic and scientific and technological innovation and protect the ecological environment on which mankind depends!
