Time:2022-5-26

Recently, slashdata, a developer research and analysis company, released a report entitled “the 22nd national situation of developers”.

Developer survey report: JavaScript and python still dominate, and rust continues to soar fourfold

The report presents survey data on more than 20000 developers from 166 countries from December 2021 to February 2022. The survey results show that JavaScript has become the most popular language for the tenth time in a row, and nearly 17.5 million developers use this popular web scripting language.

JavaScript and python dominate

According to the survey data, JavaScript and Python have maintained their persistence in terms of developer preferences. Among them, JavaScript still ranked first among the most popular programming languages, with 17.5 million developers and users using the language.

As the second most popular language after JavaScript, python surpassed Java in popularity two years ago, with 15.7 million developer users using the language. In the past six months alone, python has added 3.3 million development users.

Rust developer users soared nearly fourfold

In recent years, the popularity trend of rust language has also risen all the way. The survey data shows that from Q1 of 2020 to Q1 of 2022, the number of developer users of rust language has soared from 600000 to 2.2 million.

As for the areas where the use of rust language is growing rapidly, the report said that rust is mainly used for Internet of things projects, but also for enhancement and virtual reality (AR / VR) development.

In response, Rebecca rumbul, executive director of the rust foundation, said: “rust’s security and memory security enable people to create with confidence.”. “The community with defenders and contributors is inclusive and supported. With the increasing demand for rust developers, rust also hopes to be a good choice to improve the professional prospects of developers.”

Java document continues to grow, and PHP has the least increment

In the survey results, Java, which has attracted much attention, continues to experience strong and stable growth. Since the beginning of 2021, nearly 5 million developers have joined the Java community.

PHP has the least growth in the past six months, with a net increase of 600000 new developers from the third quarter of 2021 to the first quarter of 2022. But PHP is the second most commonly used language in web applications after JavaScript.

Go language dominates the back-end development, and kotlin relies on Android development to grow rapidly

As we all know, go and ruby are important languages in back-end development, but the survey data show that go has grown more than twice as fast as ruby in the past year. Among them, the go community now has 3.3 million developers.

The number of developers in the kotlin community increased from 2.4 million in the first quarter of 2021 to 5 million in the first quarter of 2022. This is mainly due to Google’s use of kotlin as the preferred language for Android development.

46% of developers use low code / no code tools

The survey data also shows that 46% of developers use low code or no code tools in some work.

Experienced developers, especially those with more than 10 years of experience, are least likely to use these (low code or no code) tools. However, in North America, 19% of developers use low code or no code tools in more than half of their coding work, almost twice the global average of 10%.
