Best practice – detailed explanation of five schemes for building cloud private pool (virtual IDC)

abstract

Focusing on the value, acquisition, purchase, capacity planning and landing construction of private pool (virtual IDC), we will introduce them one by one in the form of special articles. For example, it introduces the value of private pool and how to obtain it from the perspective of business certainty and continuity; Then, starting from the characteristics of business workload and combined with various demand characteristics, the corresponding purchase scheme suggestions are given; After understanding the value, acquisition and purchase scheme of private pool, when actually purchasing private pool, we need to know the resource capacity first. We introduced how to plan and implement the resource capacity on the cloud. In this article, we focus on various schemes and their advantages and disadvantages of building private pool (virtual IDC) on cloud.

01 who needs private pool on cloud

For enterprise customers, if the resource delivery requirements of the business are uncertain and the core business continuity needs to be guaranteed, the cloud private pool is very suitable. Other super large customers have the strength to build their own computer rooms. These customers also recommend building private pools on the cloud. The cause analysis is shown in Table 1.

02 how to build cloud private pool

In the context of distributed cloud, private pool also shows the characteristics of distribution

As shown in Figure 2, the overall layout of the private pool also has a variety of forms. Different customers will eventually have their own “private computing power” in different “locations” such as center, edge, local and site. The sharing scale of the center and edge is larger, and the local and on-site sharing scale is smaller.

On the cloud platform, there are relevant products and services at both the center and the edge, which support the delivery of customers’ private pool resources. For example, Alibaba cloud provides optional goods and services such as elastic guarantee, immediate capacity reservation, storage exclusive cluster, cloud exhibition and cloud box.

In the area of computing resources, combined with a variety of payment modes, you can chooseDedicatedhost with monthly package, ECS server with monthly package, ECS server with volume + savingplan combination, elastic support + savingplan combination, immediate effective capacity reservation + savingplan combinationAnd so on to support the construction of cloud private pools of computing resources. The following are analyzed one by one:

I Building private pool based on dedicatedhost

  1. Assess the capacity requirements of the business for resources

  2. The resource capacity demand is converted into the dematedhost quantity demand

  3. Purchase dedicatedhost server (by volume or monthly package)

  4. Create instance resources based on dedicatedhost, such as oversold deployment, custom specification deployment, etc

This model is simple to understand: purchase physical machines on the cloud in batches (do not need to pay attention to the operation and maintenance control of physical machines and computer rooms, and use physical servers with commercialized, service-oriented and online APIs), and independently arrange application resources based on these physical machines. These services include:Business load balancing, mixed deployment of business load, oversold business load, time-sharing of resourceswait.

This model is suitable for large enterprises, which have their own resource delivery, resource arrangement, resource management optimization team, and practice programmable infrastructure。 Originally, the supporting tasks of self built computer room, computer room power supply, security, server network management and so on were all handed over to the cloud platform. The business side focused on computing resources and business development to better support business iteration.The business party makes full use of the internal application portrait to deeply analyze the data, build an arrangement and operation and maintenance system matching the application workload characteristics, effectively and controllably improve the resource utilization and save costs。 The decathost group has built a large number of cloud based decathost clusters to improve the utilization of these resources.

II Build private pool based on ECs Server package

  1. Assess the capacity requirements of the business for resources

  2. Purchase ECS instances that match the business specifications and quantity, and hold them for a long time

This model is simple to understand: hold specific resource instances for a long time, and such resource instances are not released, so as to support the deployment and arrangement of business oriented to specific resource instances.

This model has wide adaptability and can meet the resource needs of various scales。 At the same time, these specific resources can also be handed over to the PAAS platform for capacity arrangement and deployment, so as to realize the sharing and use of the underlying annual and monthly resources.This model requires long-term holding of resources, which is suitable for the scenario of business stability and long-term developmentNot suitable for sudden resource demands

III Build a private pool based on ECs server volume + savingplan combination

  1. Assess the capacity requirements of the business for resources

  2. Purchase ECS instances that match the business specifications and quantity, and hold them for a long time according to the quantity

  3. Purchase savingplan (saving plan) that matches the specification cluster and quantity of resource instances by quantity

This model is simple to understand: hold specific resource instances for a long time, and such resource instances are not released, so as to support the deployment and arrangement of business oriented to specific resource instances.

This model is very similar to the monthly package. Both of them exchange long-term holding for preferential purchase discounts, and build a “private pool” by relying on fixed holding resources. This model is vigorously promoted by the main stream cloud manufacturers.In this mode, resources and costs are decoupled, and both flexibility and low cost are characteristics

At the same time, if there are requirements for the certainty of resources, it can also be combined with immediate capacity reservation to ensure certainty, flexibility and low cost.

IV Build a private pool with the combination of elastic support and savingplan

The private pool built earlier has onePotential “engagement”: long term scenario; andFor the scenario of short-term private resources and deterministic delivery of resources, elastic guarantee is more suitable

  1. Evaluate the regularity of business periodicity and the length of use in the cycle (for example, the cumulative length of time in a month accounts for less than 40%)

  2. Evaluate the example specification and quantity for the periodic part

  3. Purchase elastic support (open resource instances at any time)

  4. Purchase savingplan (optional)

This model is simple to understand: a private pool is reserved on the cloud, resources are opened when needed, and resources are released when not needed. The reservation fee is charged at one time, and the time to open the resource is controlled by the user.

This pattern matches the business scenario that is opened periodically. The disadvantage is that it has to bear a certain resource reservation fee (a one-time charge)。 At present, the monthly use of resources accounts for less than 40%. On the premise of ensuring the deterministic delivery of resources, it is preferential compared with the annual and monthly cost.

V Effective immediately capacity subscription + savingplan combination to build private pool

This model is more flexible and cost optimized

  1. Assess the business’s demand for resources

  2. Purchase immediate capacity reservations that can be released at any time

  3. Purchase savingplan matching volume resources

When you need to subscribe to a private resource pool, you need to release it from the cloud at any time. Only when there is free capacity in the private pool, the volume charge of computing resources is charged. When the capacity runs out, there is no additional cost. When there is idle capacity and it does not need to be used, the capacity reservation can be reduced.

The best practice of this model is to purchase savingplan and Book immediate capacity reservation. While obtaining cost flexibility, you can also obtain the certainty of resources

03 how to improve the cost performance of private pool

The essence of improving the cost performance of private pools is:

  1. In terms of purchase method, through long-term holding, obtain relatively favorable discounts;

  2. In terms of resource utilization, improve resource utilization through time-sharing reuse.

The corresponding cost performance optimization measures for private pools are shown in Table 2 above

In the cloud, customers need to ensure the continuity of their business services, which requires the certainty of cloud computing resource delivery.
